i did one of these back in april, and it’s taken me this long to accumulate enough records to do another one. i’ve been listening a lot, but not buying as much as i had been in the beginning of the year. even so, i only have four records to talk about.
this is our record shelf right now. we still live with leo’s parents, so our set-up isn’t really optimal. our turntable is basically on the floor in the other corner. my dream is to have a really great set-up with a beautiful vintage danish design cabinet. on the wall we would have six of those record-displaying frames and i would have three on display and leo would have three on display. we would have a little rack nearby that showcases our newest gets. in my mind, it is beautiful. just a few of our beautiful trinkets would decorate the top. please give me my own living space.
anyway, as you can see, we’re getting pretty full. i put away some records the other day and now the top shelf is officially full. the top shelf is for A-M, the bottom is for N-Z, plus any numerical artists (311, hello). we have over 100 records, but less than 200. the bulk of the collection is leo’s, but my portion is growing. i’d like to do a few segments sometime on our collection, maybe of my faves or some of the prettiest records or whatever.
how i’m feeling now - charli xcx
i am pretty sure i got this all the way back in the summer when we visited my dear friend megan. literally the most obvious get ever. i kind of like the uniformity of her album covers on spotify post-brat, but this cover is still good. best song? i recently rewatched bottoms (dir. rachel sennott) for the first time since seeing it in theaters back in 2023. it ends with a “party 4 u” needle drop. i actually hadn’t listened to how i’m feeling now in a hot minute, and hearing “party 4 u” after not hearing it for a while hit so hard. so: “party 4 u.”
roads to judah - deafheaven
i coincidentally had a deafheaven album in my last record round-up from april. that one was an impulse buy, this one i sought out deliberately. it was on my list. i said to leo, “i want the downward spiral and roads to judah.” it was my birthday and i got everything i wanted at the record store. best song? it kinda feels stupid to single out songs on albums like these. they all just flow together, you know? i said the same thing when i got sunbather. is this an admission of laziness? perhaps. either way, i don’t have a strong opinion on this one. i did feature “unrequited” on my playlist for october, though.
the downward spiral - nine inch nails
i had to get babygirl. i had to get bestie. i had to get my one true love (right now). it was my birthday when we went out to the record store last and all i wanted was this. and roads to judah. anyway, she was waiting right there for me. it’s a deluxe anniversary edition or something, so it has a bunch of extra bullshit on it. i haven’t spun it yet because we live with leo’s parents and our turntable is basically on the floor. but when i get to spin it it will be truly epic. i wanna play it super loud. i want it to shake the house. best song? right now the best song off of the downward spiral is probably “closer.” which is huge as i am a “heresy” truther.
the bee and puppycat soundtrack - will wiesenfeld
so i was browsing reddit as i shamefully do, and i saw someone in the bee and puppycat sub post about receiving their copy of the soundtrack that day. i was like oh, cool, and then i saw the cover, and then i saw the rest of the packaging, and i was like woah!!! so i decided that i wanted it, and i bought it. soundtracks are kind of symbolic parts of my collection. i very rarely spin them. i would like to!!! but, like i said, turntable on the floor. i love bee and puppycat so bad. best song? “insert coin (extended).” this literally only makes sense to me, but this song reminds me of “end of beginning.”
and in other news…
tacking this on at the end! on wednesday, november 20th leo and i went to underground arts for the second live edition of the carl landry record club podcast, which also doubled as a book signing for jason lipshutz’s it starts with one, which is about linkin park.
we had so much fun because all our faves were there and we got to listen to nu metal, which is a nostalgic genre for me but also sick. i’m illiterate, so i can’t read this book, but i’m glad to have it. no, for real: i will try to read this. i’m not great at reading but jason lipshutz is based because he likes my tweets.
